Junior Naturalists Day One

Today was the first day of our Junior Naturalist Camp. It's already clear we're going to have a great week!

We spent the first half of the morning learning about native plants and their unique uses and adaptations.

The second half of the morning we spent working in our Native American Three Sisters Garden.

We added two mounds of gourds and pumpkins as well, as some sunflowers, using traditional Native American techniques.

After lunch we set to work building shelters out of ponchos, rope, sticks, and whatever else we could find around us.

 It was hard work...

 ...and took some planning...

... and maybe some reconsidering...

...but in the end we had awesome results!

Later we learned about knife and fire safety. We used our knife skills to make fire starters, then lit a small fire.

After heating things up, we decided it'd be a good idea to cool off a bit...

and so we went to explore the river!

What a great start to our week!
