Today was the first day of our Junior Naturalist Camp. It's already clear we're going to have a great week!
We spent the first half of the morning learning about native plants and their unique uses and adaptations.
The second half of the morning we spent working in our Native American Three Sisters Garden.
We added two mounds of gourds and pumpkins as well, as some sunflowers, using traditional Native American techniques.
After lunch we set to work building shelters out of ponchos, rope, sticks, and whatever else we could find around us.
It was hard work...
...and took some planning...
... and maybe some reconsidering...
...but in the end we had awesome results!
Later we learned about knife and fire safety. We used our knife skills to make fire starters, then lit a small fire.
After heating things up, we decided it'd be a good idea to cool off a bit...
and so we went to explore the river!
What a great start to our week!

Young Explorers Day Four
On our last day of camp we spent the day doing two of our favorite things: fishing and playing in the river!
The kids were patient in waiting for a fish to bite.
Look at what they caught!
(that fish was a little camera-shy!)
It was a beautiful afternoon for splashing around!
We ended the day with some delicious black raspberries!
What a fun week! Thanks to all the kids that came out!

Young Explorers Day Three
We wasted no time in getting started today, and set right off on the trail!
Again, we made it all the way to the conifers.
We stopped for a snack...
and talked about the gifts trees give us.
We also got a group picture!
In the afternoon we made it down to the river.
We had a good time relaxing in the water.
and splashing around!
Some of us are regular fish!
We even found a snake!
Looks like they found something!
ooh! A crayfish!
What a fun day!
